January News

We would like to wish you all a very happy New Year and we hope 2012 will be a year full of love, light and abundance.

We look forward to welcoming you back to class especially as 2012 looks as if it will be an amazing year for us as we have a number of exciting new plans and developments.

In particular we look forward to James, our son, joining us at the centre later in the year, he has been commissioned by "Yoga" magazine to write three articles starting with this Januarys issue, which we are now stocking in the studio.

After more than 4 years of living in India this is a good introduction to the work he wishes to pursue when he returns to the UK.

Yogatraveller retreats

I had a wonderful, but different Christmas and New Year as I was teaching on two, one week retreats for Yogatraveller in Gozo. Gozo (just North of Malta) is a beautiful island and easy to reach from Leeds Bradford airport as there are direct flights to Malta.

Please see some of the attached pictures, there will be more 2012 dates to be announced shortly. www.yogatraveller.com

Narl and Power Plate - toning, slimming and weight loss New Year offer

Most people will be considering how they can improve their health and wellbeing at this time of year, so to facilitate this especially if weight loss and increased muscle tone and a slimmer shape is one of your resolutions we are offering 10 sessions on the NARL for just £100, as the usual cost in the spas is upto £100 per treatment this is amazing value when done in conjunction with the Power Plate. Please see the therapies page of the website for more information about the NARL and the Power Plate

Beginners Pilates - we have some spaces

Please book your place

In the January 3 edition of the Daily Express the article "Kickstarting the New Year" mentioned Pilates as one of the exercise options and this was the advice "look for level 3 instructors with the Register of Exercise Professionals, walk away if you join a big class where everyone is doing exactly the same exercise". It is important, therefore, to be in a small group with a well qualified teacher, where different options are given according to individual needs.

Ulpotha Sri Lanka

I am particularly delighted to be teaching at Ulpotha July 8 -July 22 www.ulpotha.com .

Ulpotha has been given many accolades such as "The best retreat centre in the world" Observer Magazine and "The entire experience is a spiritual high" Vogue Magazine.

As one of my students you will receive a 10 % discount for bookings on my retreat made by February 1 2012. You will find my biography on the Ulpotha website teachers page - as I am their most recent teacher I am the last entry on the teachers page. You will see that some of the world's leading yoga teachers have taught there, so I am honoured to have been asked.

Ulpotha generally appear to have different teachers each year, so if you did want to take advantage of the 10% offer it would be best to do it in 2012 when I will be there.

if you would like more information or to book please contact us or Ulpotha and we will send the attachment.

I would of course be delighted if you would join me on any of the retreats.

There are many different styles of yoga and when taking a retreat elsewhere it can be a real help to know the teacher as the following illustrates; when I was in Rishikesh - N.India last - year staying in an ashram, one of the yoga teachers in class exhorted us to do as many jumping jacks as we could and a move resembling a burpee, on a concrete floor and to keep going as long as we could! Needless to say I suffered the next day and decided that wasn't a style of yoga I wished to pursue!

Indian scarves

We are delighted that one of Harrogate s leading ladies fashion retailers is now stocking our higher quality scarves and wraps, each scarf is unique, however the shop price is at least double the studio price!

While our Grade "A" Himalayan silk pashminas, which are of the highest quality being similar to cashmere sell at just £44 in the studio but retail upto £200, Hawick cashmere shop in Harrogate sell the same quality pashminas at £179. So not only do you get an excellent deal but you as we buy from the Ganga Valley school shop in Rishikesh India and some of the otherpoorest communities you are also supporting others.

Yin yoga

is proving very popular as it is a deeply relaxing, restorative class as all the postures are held for upto 5 minutes the result is that you become deeply relaxed and work not only on the muscles but also the connective tissues i.e. the ligaments, tendons and myofascia. Please come along and see for yourself.

Pilates and Yoga really are best for back pain

In a study (available in the studio) commissioned by the National Backcare organisation, Pilates and Yoga came out as the top complementary therapies for back problems (although certain conditions apply i.e. a well qualified teacher, in a purpose built studio with small groups).

However, the study was clear that there is no quick fix. Strengthening the back and improving muscular control and posture requires conscientious practice, patience and regular commitment in a supervised situation. Over the Christmas break, therefore, please do keep up with your practice, those of you with more severe pelvic imbalance need to be doing your exercises up to 3 times a day. It is very easy to get out of the habit when we have a break so please do aim to keep up your practice and return to class as soon as you are able.

You also need to be aware that if you start to feel some muscle pain please do something about it before it becomes chronic, as it's much harder to correct if the problem is allowed to develop. After a recent trip south when we did far more sitting/ driving in cold conditions than is normal for me, within just 3 days I started to experience some back pain and early warning signs of the onset of sciatica, fortunately I am aware of the correct treatment strategy, i.e. a concerted effort with my usual exercises and the discomfort soon passed, and I exercise every day in any case! It's worth noting that enforced sitting/poor posture etc can soon cause problems even if you are generally fit and well.

Yoga and Back Pain

In the most recent study reported in the "Annals of Internal Medicine", commissioned by Arthritis Research UK and undertaken at York University, yoga was proven to be more effective for people suffering chronic back ache than conventional treatment as offered by GP care. Researchers found that those on the yoga courses experienced greater improvement in back function and more confidence in performing every day tasks than the control group relying on GP care alone. Prof D. Torgerson, director of the York trials said "Our results showed that yoga can provide long-term benefits to those suffering from chronic or recurrent back pain without any serious side effects". Which is not always the case if people are relying on medication or other conventional treatments.

Pregnancy and Pilates

We are dealing with a number of more complex pelvic instability cases at the moment, several of which are related to pregnancy. Studies show that 80% of pregnant women suffer from back and pelvic pain, while up to 70% of women suffer with stress incontinence and yet only 15% of women do the recommended amount of exercise ante/postnataly.

We now also run Daisy Birthing classes at the studio.

As you can see from the following quote from Jenna the Daisy Birthing classes with Amanda are going very well.

"I need to tell you all about the labour, but just wanted to say briefly now a massive thank you to you for all you taught me - it totally helped and I had the best, most easy and relaxed labour so far! I'm really sure that using the techniques you taught me and doing the breathing etc made the labour go so well - she was head down, in the right position, and I managed to get contractions going using my rotations, and then they came thick and fast. And also, the CD played on continuous and was fab! I only needed gas and air and the breathing totally helped - the midwife kept commenting how good my breathing was and how I was doing just the right thing! Anyway, I'm feeling a bit sad that I won't be at any more of the birthing classes!

Thanks so much for all you did. You totally made my birthing experience a beautiful enjoyable experience!"

Daisy Birthing is an ante natal programme. Both Pilates and yoga are especially beneficial ante and post natally, in fact many of the exercises and breathing techniques taught in the Daisy birthing class are based on yoga.

Pelvic Instability/ PSD

Currently we are dealing with a number of clients with pelvic instability. One form of pelvic instability (PSD) is a condition that can occur in some pregnancies it is painful and debilitating as in extreme cases the pelvis can separate. One of the most important things you can do to help yourself is clinical Pilates.

Needless Acupuncture pen

The acupuncture laser pen is now available for use. Please see information below

You can either use it at the studio ( it is very simple to use ), or you may prefer to have your own as in this way you can self treat a number of conditions.

The Acu-Point Pen:

is a pocket-sized self help acupuncture pen without Needles and is based on Chinese acupressure, electric pulse, and magnetic therapy.
It can be used to do a 1 hour, Do-It-Yourself Face-lift as it tightens, tones and firms facial muscles by giving micro circulation, reducing blood fat, eliminating toxins and reducing inflammation on corresponding acupuncture points. While the jade attachments make the skin smooth and soft. As it does not use electric or battery power and does not pierce the skin, so there is no risk of cross infection.

It has won several awards including Einstein’s Inventors and the New Technology Award.

It is also effective for neck and back pain, headaches, migraines, computer sore eyes and many other common ailments including hypertension, inflammation etc. within minutes of use.

In fact you can use it for almost any condition you would have acupuncture for.

I have been using it daily as it allows me to manage my sore knees without using pain killers and it has also helped an ankle sprain heal much more quickly than I would have normally expected.
