Pilates
Pilates is based on the work of Joseph Pilates, est. 1880-1967. Born a sickly child suffering from a variety of ailments such as asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, he was determined to overcome his physical weaknesses and so dedicated himself to becoming physically fit and strong. He devised a method of exercise that incorporated many aspects of fitness such as gymnastics, yoga, dance, self-defence and weight training. The resulting Pilates programme gave a perfect balance of strength and flexibility.
This method of exercise that has since been modified and developed and is now recognized as one of the safest and most effective forms of exercise for anyone who wishes to improve their overall fitness, posture and general well being.
Once the preserve of the rich and famous it is now used by top athletes such as tennis player Pat Cash and the English Cricket Team and those with back and joint problems. It is also ideal for the first time exerciser and special populations such as the elderly, pre/post natal ladies and those with stress related problems.
